I Like Anime. So What?

May 22nd, 2003 | Comments

Most people think that anime is for kids and if you enjoy watching it then you’re childish, too. Tsk, tsk. Aren’t you being stereotypical? ! I’m 20 years old and I live, breathe and think anime. You want me to shout it? I LOVE ANIME!

I like anime. so what?

For those who think anime is just for kids, why, have you ever tried watching anime even just once? Have you tried to see animation other than the usual cartoons of Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse? (I have nothing against Bugs or Mickey, really) Because anime is nothing like that. It has depth of feel. It has character. It has a story. It’s almost the same as reading a book and being transported into a different world where we get so immersed with the world and its characters that leaving it also leaves an empty longing inside is. So this just blows your argument that anime isn’t real!

Isn’t real?! This coming from the same people who watch back-to-back SOAP operas? You watch SOAP operas where the people are so vindictive that they resort to planning heinous ‘accidents’, murder, manipulation, hypnotism, exorcism (yes, even that!) only because they don’t want a poor girl to marry into their prestigious family? Unless they’re part of a top-secret international crime organization, do you really think ordinary people can do that? Be so vindictive? So . . . evil? You call that reality?

Anime characters can be really evil because they are in a different world, a different environment, with varying factors that affect their characteristics, how they turn out. So their evilness is real. And anime shows which are not fantasy-based deal with real life facts, therefore their characters are real, their circumstances are real. They are real.

And you say that anime is for the simple-minded? Think again. You are you calling simple-minded?

Boredom

May 22nd, 2003 | Comments

I’m bored. There you go. With so many wonderful and exciting things in this world, I’m bored. Think. Think. If I had every resources in the world, with no worry for consequences, what do I really want to do this very moment? Let’s see. . .

  • Go to Japan and ransack every anime and manga store there.
  • Hail Maki Murakami for creating the manga Gravitation.
  • Investigate whether Kenshin Himura really existed and what really happened to him.
  • Hunt down the voice actor of Kyou Souma, Kamui, Haru Glory and just sit there and listen to him talk.
  • Pay Nickelback to perform a private concert for me.
  • Eat cookies and cream ice cream.
  • Learn how to swim.
  • Buy a sakura tree.

Right. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to buy ice cream on my way to the airport. Don’t want to miss my flight to Japan. . .
